September 2023: Issue #068 Hello, Welcome to Island Hopper! I hope you will discover lots about Phillip Island and the surrounding area.
TIDAL Seafood FestivalSan Remo is celebrating seafood with the TIDAL Seafood Festival (formally the San Remo Fishing Festival).To be held around the San Remo Foreshore the weekend of September 15/17, it promises to be a wonderful celebration of the town’s connections to the sea. The festival kicks off on Friday evening with a gala dinner, showcasing the best of seafood from Bass Strait. Festivities on Saturday include The Blessing of the Fleet. This local tradition of blessing the fleet for a safe and plentiful season, was first held in 1955. During the day, heats and final of the National Deckie Race will be held. Previously contested by deckie’s from the commercial fishing fleet, this year it will be open to everyone. Tasks include cray pot rolling and carrying a fish bin of ice. There will be fishing demonstrations, children’s activities, cooking and filleting demonstrations plus seafood for sale. The daily pelican feeding, and other free family activities will entertain children, as well as live music and stalls. Local restaurants and cafés during the day and into the evening will be providing seafood, special dishes, local produce and entertainment. Phillip Island CircuitDo you feel the need for speed?Starting with the motorcycle Victorian Road Racing Championships in mid-September, Phillip Island Circuit is firing on all cylinders through to end November. Also in September is the Victorian State Circuit Racing Championship featuring saloon cars, Porsche 944, Formula Ford, HQ Holden, historic touring cars and more. The Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix comes to the circuit on October 20/22. And the action isn’t only at the track. Watch the motorbike cavalcade arrive on Phillip Island on Saturday morning then join in with the festivities in Thompson Street, Cowes, where there will be a big screen and live entertainment. The following weekend brings Round 6 of the Australian Superbike Championship including action from Superbike, Supersport, YMF R3 Cup and the bLU cRU Junior Cup. November brings the ever-popular Island Magic with the best in Australian motorsport. Head to the track for this packed spring schedule. PINP Community Open DayIf you are a resident of Bass Coast Shire, put Sunday September 10 in your diary for Phillip Island Nature Parks Community Open Day.Locals have free access to all PINP’s attractions (Penguin Parade, Koala Conservation Reserve, Churchill Island Heritage Farm, The Nobbies/Antarctic Journey), plus a behind-the-scenes look into PINP’s conservation work. For the first time, the penguin parade will also be open for general admission on Monday September 11.
Although events are free, they are ticketed.
